Lessons in the following topics are built in to the First Hunt experience. All lessons are hands-on, in-the-field, and practical — meaning that they’re fun and easy to remember! There is no boring “classroom” time built into the outing.
► Safety After we get settled in the cabin the first day, the first lesson is safety — not just with guns, but all the potentially dangerous things around. From knives to campfires to vehicles to snakes, there are a lot of things that require us to be careful. All activities are highly supervised, yet this is a great place for young people to grow in personal responsibility.
► Marksmanship Hitting your target is vital in hunting, and the lessons involved translate to powerful life teachings. We take hunters as young as six and give them the skills they need to hit the mark, perfectly — the first time and every time. You’ll be surprised what they can do!
► Shot placement Hitting what you’re aiming at is one thing, but knowing where to aim is something completely different. On a moving animal this can be quite tricky, and it can be one of the hardest things to teach a young hunter. We’ve been blessed with a proprietary method that is easy to learn and ensures perfect shot placement every time. It’s as simple as Tic-Tac-Toe!
► Woodsmanship and animal behavior We hardly ever hunt from established blinds on our First Hunts. Most animals are taken by stalking the game. This is the most exciting way to do it, and it’s also the best way to instill some valuable lessons in animal senses and behavior, using natural cover and wind direction to your advantage, and so much more.
► Tracking, processing and trophy care There’s more to hunting than just bagging an animal. What comes after the shot is just as important! During our First Hunts, the youth participate hands-on in the whole experience — from finding downed game, to field dressing, skinning and quartering, to getting the trophy ready for the taxidermist. We’ll also give you some great recipes for cooking the meat at home!
► Hunting camp life It’s too bad some folks think the best way to educate young hunters is in a classroom, as if our sporting heritage can be contained in a workbook. It’s the campfires, camaraderie, meals and more — the hunting camp life — that make our First Hunts special.
► Deeper knowledge of the Creator Part of what makes the outdoors so compelling for many people is the opportunity to see the Creator’s handiwork firsthand, and tune in a bit closer to what He may be trying to tell us. CTO is a Christian youth organization, and the leaders on the outing will ensure a wholesome environment in which the participants can grow in their knowledge and reverence for God. |
